Marvel lowdown: What to watch in 2022
With Marvel’s new film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness upon us this week, we wanted to have a quick look at the other offerings Marvel has coming up. It’s an exciting time to be a Marvel superhero with lots of saving the world to be done!
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
As mentioned, this is arriving in cinemas this week! It features Benedict Cumberbatch back as the title character, and Rachel McAdams as Dr. Christine Palmer. With Elizbeth Olsen bringing over her character of Wanda Maximoff / The Scarlet Witch from The Avengers films and WandaVision TV show and Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier from the X-Men franchise, we can see that Marvel are bringing together the threads of the MCU. Renowned horror director, Sam Raimi, is at the helm and he’s clearly going to make our hero suffer some massive repercussions for his actions in Spider-Man: No Way Home. If the rumours are true and Loki and Deadpool show up in the Multiverse of Madness we know we’re in for a blast. We say bring on Dark Strange!
Thor: Love & Thunder
Also hitting cinemas soon is Thor: Love & Thunder, which is coming on July 7th. Directed by Taika Waititi and starring Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, and Christian Bale, it features a new look for Thor, although it’s not as extreme as his look in Endgame! The addition of Russell Crowe to the cast as Zeus, and bringing in Guardians of the Galaxy alum, Chris Pratt as Peter Quinn / Star-Lord and Karen Gillan as Nebula give us some hints at its direction, but much about the film has been pretty hush-hush. What we do know is that Christian Bale’s character, Gorr the god butcher, is one of the deadliest Marvel villains, so Thor will have his work cut out for him in this one!
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
The other big cinema release for Marvel this year is the much-anticipated Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Huge changes had to be made after the death of star Chadwick Boseman in August 2020. Marvel execs have confirmed T’Challa is not being recast or digitally recreated, and while the mantel of Black Panther is designed to be passed on from one king to the next, word is that there will not be a new Black Panther in this movie. The original Black Panther was one of the most successful movies for Marvel, after the 4 Avenger films, and with much of the original cast returning, it’s one we’re super excited for. Can they top their Best Picture Oscar nomination and win? We’ll have to wait and see!
Ms. Marvel
Moving over to the Disney+ releases, there’s plenty to be looking forward to there as well! First is Ms. Marvel, which will be airing in June. This 6-episode series stars newcomer Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan / Ms. Marvel, who has super-powered DNA due to experiments on previous generations. She will reprise the role in the upcoming film The Marvels, which is due to hit cinemas in July 2023. The film also features Brie Larson as Captain Marvel and Teyonah Parris who will bring over her character Monica Rambeau from WandaVision.
She-Hulk
14 years (and half a dozen Marvel outings) after he was first exposed to the gamma rays and became the Incredible Hulk, Mark Ruffalo is back for the new Disney+ series, She-Hulk. The title character is brought to life by Tatiana Maslany, the stand-out star from Orphan Black. Her character, Jennifer Walters, is Bruce Banner’s cousin, who gets some of his powers from an emergency blood transfusion. Touted as a “legal Comedy” and “a cross between Avengers and Ally McBeal”, this lawyer turned superhero has less power than Bruce’s Hulk, but more emotional control. Having loved her 17+ roles in Orphan Black, we can’t wait to see what she brings to the MCU!
Secret Invasion
If you love Samuel L Jackson as Nick Fury, then this new series is one for you! Secret Invasion is due in late 2022 and also stars Marvel favourites Cobie Smulders, Ben Mendelsohn, Martin Freeman, and Don Cheadle. Nick Fury and Ben Mendelsohn’s Talos team up to defend Earth against an invasion of shape-shifting Skrulls. This 6-part series is set to have epic effects to go with its superstar cast.
Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special
And finally, for 2022 we’ve got the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special heading to Disney+ in November. It was filmed alongside the new movie Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 3, which is set to be released around May 2023. While little information has been released about this project, we’re sure it’ll feature our favourite Guardians with their trademark tongue-in-cheek dialogue, some crazy antics, and spontaneous dancing! Writer and director James Gunn has labelled it “the greatest thing I’ve ever done in my life” and “totally ridiculous.” Sounds like the perfect way to wrap up the year!
2023 and beyond
While we’re looking forward to second seasons of Loki and Falcon & the Winter Soldier, they look to be headed for 2023 releases. With so many projects to come in 2023 (Deadpool 3!), and new films and television shows slated through into 2028, the MCU will be providing us with plenty of entertainment – and cosplay ideas! – well into the future.
